Dune: The Spice Warsthe strategy video game based on the science fiction universe of Frank Herbert -creator of the Dune saga-, has announced the premiere of its early access on Steam from April 26.
Those responsible for this new franchise title are distributor Funcom and studio Shiro Gameswhich focused on developing an experience with 4X elements (which stands for “explore, expand, exploit and exterminate”) with the entire paradigm of the Dune universe and the complex political factions of the planet Arrakis.
The first images they shared show a map built from well-known landscapes of this desert land, in addition to an interface that displays gauges for diplomacy, military composition, and region exploration.
The initial approach recalls the dynamics of the famous franchise of total warwhich also leverages the real-time strategy genre and you must command a series of factions -whose identities depend on the title’s mythology- to dominate enemies and build strong alliances.
the developer Shiro Games confirmed that, for now, there will be four playable factions: the Fremen, the Smugglers, House Atreides and House Harkonnen. Each of them will have the opportunity to establish relations with the Sietches (colonies of neutral natives), although the Fremen faction has a notable advantage in doing so.
The game mechanics match the personality depicted in the film. Dunes (2021)a cinematic universe that plans to expand on October 20, 2023.
According to the advances published on his page of Early Accessthe Harkonnen House he has the potential to exploit questionable diplomatic procedures (even among his allies) and an unstoppable bloodthirsty army. While the Atreides Houseis followed by their reputation as honorable diplomats, which benefits them to bring order to conquered regions and maintain a well-trained army.
The Smugglers They manage their own territory and, although their political influence does not stretch very far, their agents are distributed in all corners of the universe and their units benefit from stealth tactics. The Fremen it is a faction with a strong religious structure, also expert in ambush tactics and with a greater ability to withstand the problems of the Desert.
While the proposal for now reveals the basic mechanics of the strategythe expectation is that Dune: The Spice Wars also have a multiplayer mode and a single-player campaign at the end of its early access phase.
Dune: The Spice Wars isn’t the only game in the franchise that Funcom and Shiro Games are dedicated to, since they have declared that they are developing four titles in total with the collaboration of NUKKLEAR, a German study. “This is a six-year partnership to launch, at least three PC video games and one console game“, they described in a official statement.
NUKKLEAR will be in charge of an open-world survival multiplayer that began pre-production in 2019 and builds on Funcom’s experience with the successful launch of Conan Exiles (2017).
This mega-production led by Funcom is also supported by Chinese business investment Tencent $148 millionwhich gave them the appearance of increasing what they described as “their level of ambition with resources allocated to other initiatives and additional funding”.
On the side of Shiro Games and its announcement of Dune: The Spice WarsThere is a lot of optimism even after more than four years of production. “With so many fans of the Dune series in our studio, the excitement in the working environment is very real, and we hope that reflects in the game. With all this passion for original work and the experience that we learned from creating Northgard (another real-time strategy game), we can’t wait to get this new game into the hands of players.” Sebastien Vidal, CEO of Shiro Games.
