That day he went to the theater and gave his role as an enemy of the people like always. At the end, already in the locker room, they told him that Guillaume Francella was in the audience and wanted to greet her. She received him, they talked for a few minutes and never heard from him again. A year later, while he was in season in Mar del Plata, he received a call Marc Carnevale: Director of elsa and fred Yes Lionheart She was about to shoot a new movie, and she wanted to meet her because Francella had thought of her to play her daughter in fiction. It was like that Romina Fernandes became Carla Flores, one of the characters in Hail. “Guillermo’s attitude moves me, because what he did is not very common. They usually compliment you but don’t recommend you. He is a great colleague, he trusted me and I learned a lot from him“, he says THE NATION.

The actress admits that, despite a long career in the theater, she did not have much experience on film sets. “As a result, he was playing in the big leagues. Sometimes I was quite nervous because I felt very responsible and there were things in cinema that I had never experienced.. Guillermo was very generous with me, he took care to put me at ease. I absorbed everything I could from him as well as other great masters who worked on the film, like Carnevale or Peto Menahem,” he comments.

What Romina Fernandes never imagined was the repercussions she had Hail. For better and for worse. Let’s start with the good: since its premiere and until last week, it was the non-English speaking film of netflix the most viewed in the world. It ranked number 1 in countries like Peru, Chile and Colombia, but also in Bulgaria, Israel, Taiwan and Greece. “I did not expect such success. I imagined that it would be widely seen in Argentina, but not that it would be appreciated all over the world – she says, still surprised-. I think it’s because it’s not a local story, it touches on universal themes. Plus, it deals with many of life’s ironies with humor and makes us think about our priorities. A lot of people have written to me saying they identify with my character and the father-daughter relationship.”.

Fernandes plays Carla, the daughter of Miguel Flores (Francella), a famous meteorologist who has never missed a forecast throughout his career. However, on the day of the premiere of his own television show, he did not warn of heavy hail that was about to fall on the city of Buenos Aires. So the public – who loved him and stopped him in the street to ask him selfie and autographs-, he begins to hate him and blame him for all the evils and destruction caused by the storm.

The rejection of the public is such that he is forced to flee and return to his native Cordoba, where he finds his daughter. A girl he barely talks to on the phone and – of course – barely knows. “I loved my character because he’s a super current mine, who doesn’t want to get married, who doesn’t want to have children. And when his father arrives, he starts asking why he doesn’t want a family and complains about the grandchildren. These two generations face each other, “he assumes.

-Social and family mandates appear…

– Yes, the mandates that we all have and that we must begin to break. I have many friends like Carla who don’t want to be mothers and who have this social and family burden. I who already have a son, I feel the weight of having to give him a little brother. You have to stop and think about what you really want.

-Your father was the famous theater director Augusto Fernandes. How was your relationship with him? Did you have the kind of father-daughter fights you see in the movie?

-Do not. My old man was an older man but he thought it was super old fashioned for me to get married. As he loved my husband very much, he was afraid that the marriage would ruin our bond. In real life, I have a very different position than Carla: I’m married, I’m a mother, but I’ve always consciously tried to balance all aspects of my life. We spend a lot of time with our son, but at the same time we take care of our time as a couple, to go out, go to the theater, have dinner and have our privacy. We help each other so no one feels like they can’t do what they want. It seems to me that in order to have a good motherhood and for your son to grow up happy, you have to be happy. I’m happy to spend time with my baby, but I’m also happy to work, I’m happy with my personal time, with my husband. In fact, now I’m going to shoot a movie in Uruguay for a month and a half and my son is staying here with his father.

“Very exaggerated.” “Unlikely”. “Imposed”. Or “Why hire an actress from Buenos Aires to play Cordoba?”. In recent days, social networks have been full of criticism against Romina Fernandes because of the Cordovan air she had to adopt for her role in Hail.

"I think I was left in the middle of an old pike between Córdoba and Buenos Aires, something that can also be seen in the plot of the film and which makes me very sorry"says Fernandes about the criticism he received for his work in the film
“I think I found myself in the middle of an old pica between Córdoba and Buenos Aires, something that can also be seen in the plot of the film and which makes me very sorry,” Fernandes says of the criticisms he received for her work in the film.

When I hear that they wonder why they didn’t put an actress from Cordoba, I feel like it contradicts the fundamentals of acting. It is not possible that only a Cordovan actress can play a Cordovan. It’s not like that. In this case, one would have to wonder why they are not looking for doctors to act as doctors. There are many Spanish actresses who have starred in Argentinian films and there are many Cordovan actresses and actors in Buenos Aires who have to do an air of Buenos Aires. This is a comment that I don’t understand. Playing is just becoming others, ”she defends herself, a little annoyed.

I think I was left in the middle of an old pike between Córdoba and Buenos Aires, something that can also be seen in the plot of the film and which makes me very sorry“, to follow.

-How do you deal with this deluge of criticism?

It is not pleasant to read such things. I was unprepared to receive them, I had to take a crash course in what exposure is. I’m really sorry because it cost me a lot to have a role like this, it wasn’t easy. And I also prepared myself with a coach Cordovan for six months to perform the tune. I did it with a lot of commitment and respect.

-Did they make you doubt your talent as an actress?

– No, they didn’t make me doubt. Fortunately, these negative reviews are not unanimous, I also received many compliments, even from Cordoba. But I’m really sorry that we are like this, that there is so much human evil.
